In 2015, Jaap Robben (1984) won the Dutch booksellers prize (the ‘Nederlandse Boekhandelsprijs’) for his debut novel Birk, and was Nijmegen’s writer-in-residence. His new novel Zomervacht tells the story of thirteen-year-old Brian who lives with his father in a caravan on a remote terrain. Brian’s mentally and physically handicapped brother Lucien spends his days in an institution. However, renovations over the summer require Lucien to stay elsewhere. His father, driven mostly by the prospect of remuneration, takes Lucien in to live with them in the caravan and puts Brian in charge of taking care of his brother. But how you do talk with someone who doesn’t speak? How do you take care of someone who doesn’t know what he needs? How can you be sure to make the right choices if you still have to figure it all out for yourself?
