Magritte - ceci ne pas une pipe

This year we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of the surrealist painter Magritte. Even after his death, his talent continues to inspire way beyond Belgian borders. Floris van Bommel pays homage to the painter by introducing his ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’ limited edition sneakers.

Magritte certainly doesn’t need any introduction. Hundreds of publications, expositions in all of the renowned, international museums, a museum dedicated to him in Brussels, and Magritte’s portrait on the official Belgian banknotes are but some examples that illustrate the significance of his oeuvre. The pipe, the bowler hat, the apple, the dove and the man are the most iconic motifs in his works and they haven’t ceased to appeal and inspire. With the utmost respect for this Belgian heritage, Floris van Bommel has designed a colourful sneaker collection that playfully pays tribute to the painter.

Seeing is believing…

Floris: “Magritte’s legacy is closely guarded by his family. Therefore, it is a great honour to have permission to launch an official Magritte project during his anniversary year. For 89 years, people have been asking themselves what the ‘pipe’ that isn’t a ‘pipe’ actually is. We carried out some investigations to find out if it couldn’t be a sportive line on a pair of sneakers. I can’t be entirely sure of it, but in any case, it was an interesting quest. Perhaps it is the very quest that constitutes the ‘pipe’?! That’s a tricky one… ”

Floris: “For Magritte’s pipe, we actually borrowed a little bit from Andy Warhol. The brown shades turned into pop art colours. Warhol initially started out as an illustrator for shoes, so we are going full circle here. Well, sort of anyway...”
